Wait Your Turn

A few weeks ago I had a photo session for a DVD cover of an upcoming independent film. The shoot was pretty straight forward and called for the two main characters to be photographed against white seamless so the type and additional graphics can be added. Actors Josh Murray and Kelly Hoelscher were a pleasure to work and I had forgotten how nice it is to work with talented actors who can provide a photographer with the perfect expression and emotion on cue. When you work with someone of this caliber you look through the viewfinder and know before you have the image before ever touching the shutter release.

I shot a number of images because they needed a DVD cover as well as posters and promotional images for the web site. Andrew Ehrenkrook the films producer was on site and playing the role of art director and gave me a lot of freedom during the session which is always appreciated.

Nikon's Latest Flagship Product

Nikon D3 Well it's not news to anyone that watches the industry that Nikon announced a new flagship camera on August 23, 2007. This new camera is already turning the industry upside and because of its low ISO noise and full frame sensor. The camera doesn't officially ship until the end of November but pre-production cameras are showing up in the hands of photojournalist and other professional photographers in all kinds of venues.

The reason for all of the hoopla around this camera could be attributed to many of its new features but the two that are getting the most attention are the extremely low noise characteristics and the 11 frames per second shooting speed. Canon cameras have had and edge in high ISO low noise for a couple of years now but Nikon has certainly raised the bar with the D3. For example the ISO on this camera goes from 100 to 25,600 and the samples so far show that you can shoot up to 6400 and make completely usable images. As a comparison images of ISO 800 is about the highest I would use on my D2x although I have used 1600 on occasion but the images from the D3 are nothing short of amazing.

Tell Me A Story

Last week I attended the National Press Photographers Association's Flying Short Course. This was a two day course for members of the NPPA to help educate photojournalist and was held in several cities around the country. The multi city tour started in Washington DC and was hosted by USA Today / Gannett Publishing in their beautiful facility in McLean Virginia. There were some amazingly talented photographers who spoke on their experiences and shared some of their most well known work. A couple of the most noted photographers where Mary F. Calvert from the Washington Times, Renee C. Byer from the Sacramento Bee and Carolyn Cole from the Los Angles Times

The theme of this years course was multimedia story telling which is the technique of combining images and audio or video to tell the story of a person or event. There are multiple techniques but most photojournalist use the voice of the subject themselves to tell their own story. Most of the larger newspapers and now many of the smaller market papers are developing more of this type of content as a way to give their on-line readers a more engaging experence than what is available via print.

Get Ready, Set Go !

Get Ready Set GoWell after a lot of thought and discussion with my friend and co-host of the GodsMac podcast Gabe Taviano, I decided to redesign (with his help) the Christian Photography web site. One of the issues I have been struggling with for a long time was should I start a blog and do I have any thing to say that anyone else would care about. To be honest with you blogging felt a little self indulgent and would make the site all about me and not photography or glorifying God with the talents he has given me. What changed my mind was an interview we did with Arron Conrad of AC180.com for GodsMac Episode 32. I encourage you to check out the podcast and their site but the short version was these group of men have enriched the life's of others through sharing their own experiences and thoughts and after all that is one of the things I hope to accomplish with Christian Photography.

So I have no idea if Christian Photography will take this same path or if anyone will even read this site but this is a step of faith and only God knows what will happen next.
